“A Return to the African Future” is more than the Standard Bank Luju Food & Lifestyle Festival’s overarching theme. It is a bold stance that summons us to reclaim our rich heritage, reimagine our African identity and reconnect with the traditions that sustained our forefathers.
At Luju 2026, taking place 1 – 2 August at House On Fire, Malkerns, Eswatini, that mandate finds its most delicious expression yet.
House On Fire is proud to unveil the culinary theme for the 8th edition of one of Southern Africa’s leading food, fashion and music events: Nguni Foodways.
What are the Nguni Foodways?
Nguni Foodways At the 2026 Standard Bank Luju Food & Lifestyle Festival, we celebrate Nguni Foodways, a living culinary landscape shaped by the people, places, practices and flavours that connect Nguni communities across Southern Africa. More than a cuisine, Nguni foodways offer a lens through which we understand the evolution of society itself: from hunter-gatherer traditions and nomadic pastoralism to contemporary food cultures. Food has always been at the centre of this journey, revealing an enduring relationship between people and place, where it serves as both sustenance and cultural memory.
Ancient Techniques, Living Practices
Rooted in the landscapes of Eswatini, South Africa, Zimbabwe and beyond, Nguni food traditions have evolved through centuries of migration, exchange and adaptation, absorbing influences from neighbouring communities, traders and settlers while remaining grounded in indigenous knowledge. Fermentation, drying, smoking, slow cooking over wood fires and 1 careful storage reflect generations of accumulated wisdom, where resilience, sustainability and culinary creativity existed side by side. Today, these foundations inspire a new generation of chefs, farmers, brewers and artisans. Ancient techniques are being reinterpreted through contemporary gastronomy, and traditional wisdom is becoming a catalyst for creativity, sustainability and economic opportunity.
What to Expect at Luju 2026
At Luju 2026, Nguni Foodways comes alive through a dynamic culinary programme designed to educate, inspire and sustain. Festivalgoers will experience curated food demonstrations, sonic food experiences, botanical workshops, Nguni fine dining showcases and immersive food environments across the festival grounds. Livestock demonstrations will examine the cultural and economic significance of indigenous breeds, while brewing masterclasses and sommelier-led tastings will celebrate fermentation as one of Africa’s oldest and most sophisticated food technologies.
Farm-To-Fork Cook Off & Food Indaba
The festival’s renowned Farm-to-Fork Cook-Off returns, pairing chefs and producers to create bold and imaginative dishes inspired by indigenous ingredients, regenerative agriculture and the diverse flavours of the Nguni food landscape.
The Food Indaba will convene chefs, academics, farmers, food entrepreneurs and cultural custodians around a contemporary Ancestral Table. Through conversations that cross borders and disciplines, participants will explore the shared and distinct food traditions of Nguni communities throughout Southern Africa, examining how indigenous knowledge can inform future food systems, sustainability, culinary identity and economic development.
Beyond the Plate
Beyond the festival experience, Luju remains committed to nurturing the future of African food. Capacity-building workshops for chefs, food vendors and hospitality professionals will provide opportunities for skills development, knowledge exchange and industry growth, ensuring that culinary heritage continues to generate meaningful opportunities for future generations.
Nguni Foodways is not a journey into the past. It is a celebration of a living, evolving food culture, one that honours its roots while boldly imagining the future.
