“A Return to the African Future” is more than the Standard Bank Luju Food & Lifestyle Festival’s overarching theme. It is a bold stance that summons us to reclaim our rich heritage, reimagine our African identity and reconnect with the traditions that sustained our forefathers.
At Luju 2026, taking place 1 – 2 August at House On Fire, Malkerns, Eswatini, that mandate finds its most striking expression yet.
House On Fire is proud to unveil the fashion theme for the 8th edition of one of Southern Africa’s leading food, fashion and music events: Kwasukasukela.
Once Upon a Time
Kwasukasukela, the siSwati expression for “Once Upon a Time” is a nostalgic prelude to folktales told around the fire. As a tribute to imagination shaped by heritage, it invites us on a journey back to the roots of African storytelling.
In resonance with this year’s overarching theme, Kwasukasukela remembers the past as a living archive of style and meaning sourced from narratives of trailblazing figures, the animals that sustain us, the landscapes that inspire us and the lessons that have travelled through generations by word of mouth.
2 Days, 2 Outfits: Your Luju Fashion Inspo
Come ready to be the main character of your fashion story. Luju 2026 invites festivalgoers to explore personal anecdotes and diverse cultural tales threaded seamlessly through traditional motifs, proverbs and characters found across Africa’s oral histories. Think woven textures, symbolic patterns, natural materials and inventive reinterpretations of familiar stories. Your outfit should be a creative translation of “Once Upon a Time” in colour, fabric and form.
The Luju Fashion Show
The showstopping Luju Fashion Show returns to the Luju Fashion Runway, featuring a headline designer alongside a dynamic mix of local and regional talent. This year’s Luju Fashion Programme will once again support local designers along their journey to creating collections for the 2026 runway showcase and due to an overwhelming response from applicants, the programme has expanded to include 12 Eswatini designers this year. As always, Luju remains committed to growing Eswatini’s fashion entrepreneurship through mentorship, technical support, trade linkage and media coverage.
The Fashion Indaba
The Fashion Indaba unites designers, stylists, retailers, fabric producers and industry organisations for an honest conversation about the business of fashion. Dialogues will examine the current state of Eswatini’s fashion industry, address common challenges and explore pathways toward a value chain that prioritises sustainable production and consumption — building an industry that is as resilient as it is creative.
